"Black and White Sunflower #1"

This is one of several images I made in 1990 with a single sunflower as the subject. When I first printed these images, I totally overlooked this one since the negative is a little flawed and thus the composition of the frame is not what I had intended.

Years later, when I began scanning my old negatives, this image stood out among the others partly due to it’s flaws. After careful cropping and other digital work, this subtle, detailed image was revealed. The result has left me feeling like this is a very recent piece even though I began working on it many years ago.
